Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Web3 game?
Web3 games, also known as Blockchain games or Crypto games, are video games either built on or are connected to a blockchain. The brand of blockchain varies from game to game which include, but are not limited to, Ethereum, Solana, Cardano and Enjin. Some games have built their infastructure on these networks while others have their economy system linked to them. Almost every blockchain game integrates NFT technology in their assets which can include, but are also not limited to, in-game currency, player skins/apparel, vehicles, weapons, land plots, etc. This utilizes NFT technology as it was originally intended, giving assets real world value and true ownership. Do I need to know about blobkchains and crypto to play Web3 Games?
Web3 game developers are continuously developing and implementing systems to make Web3 games as easy to play as traditional games. The goal is to be able to utilize all aspects and advantages of the game without needing to know things like how to create blockchain wallets or how to trade NFTs. While these are not overly complicated to learn, developers understand that most traditional gamers won't want to deal with anything that keeps them from just playing the game. Having said this, most Web3 games at this current point in time are in development or testing phases and require certain asset ownership to access their games, this is more of a priviledge and reward for early investors and fans. iIf you see a game that interests you but requires asset ownership or access codes, fret not, this means that the game is likely in development or testing stages and you should keep an eye on it for signs of public release, the best way to achieve this is to get involved in their Discord or social channels where they often have give aways or sales but most importantly, this is where they will post their development updates.
Can I earn real money in Web3 Games?
This entirely depentds, like all things, on the market within the game. The concept of "play to earn" or "P2E" games has been around for a long time and it's true potential is finally being realized in Web3, however it's not as simple as just playing and earning. There will bw instances where you'll be able to participate in competitions or mini games and earn in-game currency which can either be in the form of cryptocurrency or likely redeemable for cryptocurrency, though the real earning potential will be the creation, sale and trading of in-game assets. We've seen this in the very first P2E game Entropia Universe, where players could mine or hunt for resources, sell those or use them to craft items such as clothing, armour, vehicles, weapons, etc, and then sold in their player owned shop or sold to shop owners who then resold, and so on. These games will create their own businesses and player economies, independant of developers. NFT technology allows true ownership of these assets and many more options to be able to buy and sell. The amount you can earn from Web 3 games will be entirely dependant on you, whether you just want to be a miner or hunter, or you own land and the shops built on that land or even an entire province or in some cases, entire planets!!
What is the Metaverse?
The term "Metaverse" has been thrown around a lot lately, it's become somewhat of a keyword for companies to use in order to gain users or interest. In reality, a true Metaverse would be a central hub connecting players and economies to all of the different games and blockchains. Anyone who's watched the movie "Ready Player One" will have a better understanding of this concept where the Metaverse was referred to as 'The Oasis" where players could hang out, have their own custom places and shop for in-game assets. This movie is referred to quite a bit in the Web 3 space because it's a very accurate depection of the goals of developers. Web3 games are being developed on many different blockchains which are not currently interoperable, but the long term goal is for all blockchains of a certain utility to be able to integrate seamlessly together, creating what's called a "chain agnostic" space. This isn't as far off as you might think either, each game developer has this unifying goal in mind and each one is actively developing technologies to make this a reality, the more games that are developed in Web3, the higher the chance this will be the future of gaming. An example of this for people that have not seen Ready Player One would be earning or purchasing an awesome weapon, vehicle or cosmetic item in one game and being able to use that item in any Web3 game they play. In tradtitional games, earned or purchased items are locked and tied to that game and very often, to that account or even to that character and when that game is either superseded or shut down, those items are lost and cannot be transfered to any other game, Web3 is the solution to this dilema that has plagued just about every gamer to date.
